A Day with Kids....

Yesterday 3 ladies took 3 kids for an outing... Two sisters, a grandmother and the three kids under the age of nine.. We went to the Ancient Redwoods on highway 101. Beautiful day with warmth in the air. It will be a memory for all of us for a long time. We did the Confusion Hill tour and yes.. left feeling confused. Could not find the car keys after the walk through the house. The kids could not walk straight and needed help getting out of the building but did just fine running in the mighty Redwood Forest. Boy did they love that time. I sat and listened to their voices as the younger group of 5 became one with the forest.
Nature can sure bring joy to everyone..

2010.... Spring ..... a new beginning....

Gosh... I have not posted for a very long time.. my life has been going in a different direction for sure. But I am back. This is the time our local artist are preparing for their open studio event in June. I have my second event coming. I will be working with 3 other ladies in our area to promote our art so this connection will be fun and hopefully help all of us.

Life has a way of directing you.. doors open and doors close.... allowing the movement is what I feel makes a person successful.. being free to accept the unknown and learning to trust. It allows you also to be more creative and breeds inspirations... or so I believe..

TAKING CHARGE....

I am learning that success is all about work. So many people think artist are found, when really it is making yourself known.. I have recently discovered this very important point. Keep promoting yourself and never think you have failed. It takes years to see success and those that win are marathon runners.. This is not for sprinters..

Buy books to help you .. do all the things successful people are doing... and put some money into your art now to show off your art..
If nothing else you will be seen as being successful and perception is everything.  cheers...

Focus...

After reading several art blogs today I am seeing many people are selecting a word for the next year. Well I was thinking of doing that too. I decided Focus was my word..

Why.. because it will take a great deal of focus to achieve my goal of promoting my art. First.. I need to devote the time to create, and to find avenues for exposure.

Secondly I will need to focus on the positive and not allow any set backs discourage me. I need to see this as a long journey with many days of movement .. I will not always see growth each day but the long term growth is more important.. where am I now and where was I last year.. and then, where will I be in a year.. keep the focus that growth is measured not in one show, one sale, or one good day.. It is adding up everything and moving forward.

Now.. a new direction.... '09

Well... today is the end and tomorrow is the beginning... I must say I am not leaving my life but yes beginning a new life in '09. You have to shut some doors so others can open. That brings a new beginning, for we all have to make decisions where to direct our energies.

I have found that to really make a life in art you need time. You need time to work and to think. Focus is so important and having time to work is so important. It is not something you can fit into your life and be successful.

So.. having said that... the new beginning is limiting my energy for others and keeping my life free for my art. I am fortunate to have little demands so can make this work...

Challenges...

I have entered many challenges and find they are a means to bring out the best in an artist. You have to focus on a theme and guidelines but keep your style. Great avenue to broaden your talents.

I am working on a challenge right now. It is a 3"x5" notebook that is to be designed with the theme... Everyone You Know. Now.. it will tour the East Coast and is for sale.

This is a great way to get exposure for yourself and for your art...

Now for an interesting challenge I entered... creating a postage stamp.. I had to have two identical stamps and was given the letter A for the theme... That may have started my career for the creators of the challenge selected my entry to be used in their book. It is now in a museum on the East Coast...

Yes... you have to get into the little things too...... to be an artist...

A short history....

Well.. how do you begin to tell how art became part of your life?

I believe it has always been there. I taught young children for years and watched how they created without any instruction from adults. I was amazed how children were able to create wonderful pieces that I felt should be hung in galleries.. I can safely say I saw hundreds of pieces of fine art during my teaching career. I had a time during the day where everyone had freedom to explore by drawing and using color. All grades (K-6) but the younger the children the more they were willing to explore.

So.. they taught me.. I watched.. learned.. and found the secret is not to judge yourself.. being an artist is a  natural talent and will develop over time..

As an artist I have allowed myself to be free of the thought I have to learn to do this.. I am not looking for awards, prestige.. or a name in the art world.. I want to grow from the intuitive me, not the rational me..

Altered Art A Few Tips...

I have been working with Altered Art for some time and started with making Altered Books. There are so many techniques one can use in Altered Art. I have found even the freedom to choose is an issue for it can overwhelm you.

So having said that ... I think someone starting needs to limit their techniques and work by modifying them.. for an example... if you choose to use stamps... then how can you use them and get creative with just stamps... pick 5 or 6 things.. like stamping, collage papers, watercolor pens, transfer methods, and die cut materials.. then... go for it.. explore and work for a few weeks and see what happens..

Be careful not fall into the trap of trying everything at once, and the big issue is something new is out in the world... oh .. how we want to try that right now!!!!  hesitate... for it will take you into another direction and may confuse you.. there is plenty of time to learn new things and really you want to develop a style of your own, not imitate everyone else...

smiles....
